Longyearbyen
July 7, 2026
This morning, we enjoyed a scenic cruise through Billefjorden and Isfjorden, taking in the dramatic Arctic landscape and distant glaciers. Along the way, we caught a glimpse of Pyramiden, an abandoned Russian mining settlement, from a distance. Its deteriorating buildings, rusting pipes, and remnants of mining operations were a stark reminder of the complicated and lasting impact human activity can have on this remote Arctic environment.
After lunch, we arrived in Longyearbyen. During our previous visit, we had already taken two excursions, so this time we chose to enjoy a relaxed afternoon with a visit to the Svalbard Museum.
We began by walking along the coastal road toward the famous polar bear warning sign, which reminds visitors that carrying a firearm for protection is required beyond that point because of the risk of encountering polar bears. After taking a few photos, we explored the museum, where we learned more about the history, wildlife, and unique environment of the Svalbard Islands. We then caught the shuttle bus back to the ship, satisfied with another pleasant and unhurried day in the High Arctic.
As we sailed into and out of Longyearbyen, the expedition team also pointed out two abandoned Russian mining settlements and shared the stories behind their rise and decline, offering another fascinating glimpse into Svalbard's history.
