Kolinuuro Loop 徒步

July 21, 2026

Today's weather was just as pleasant as yesterday's, although the lake was a bit rough with small waves. Our original plan was to row the boat out to one of the tiny islands, but because of the choppy water, we changed our plans and enjoyed lunch at a lakeside café near the ski lift instead.

After a short afternoon nap, I returned to Koli National Park to hike the Kolinuuro Loop, a 2.2-mile trail with about 425 feet of elevation gain, marked by red trail markers. Roughly half of the route overlaps with the Mäkrän Kierto Trail, giving me another opportunity to revisit several viewpoints we had missed the previous day.

Even on my second visit, the panoramic view from Koli Ukko was every bit as breathtaking as before. I also searched for the famous pine tree featured in Eero Järnefelt’s 1928 painting Landscape from Koli. The tree had died just last month, but I couldn’t identify its exact location. Even so, it was meaningful to walk through the landscape that inspired one of Finland’s most iconic paintings.

Looking back, I think we should have stayed at the hotel inside the national park. Having more time within the park would have allowed us to explore its trails and viewpoints at a much more leisurely pace.
