We woke early to watch the sunrise over Annapurna Base Camp. With so many people gathered there, we climbed as high as we could to escape the crowds and find a quieter vantage point. As the sun rose, its first rays swept across the snow-covered mountains, turning the peaks brilliant gold. It was a breathtaking reward for the long journey to ABC.
Later that morning, three teammates who had descended to Pokhara two days earlier returned to base camp by helicopter. We were delighted to see them again and relieved that they had recovered well. Because of the altitude, however, they were allowed to stay for only 30 minutes before flying back down.
Unfortunately, two other teammates decided to take a helicopter to Pokhara because one of them was feeling unwell. Watching them leave was a sobering reminder that mountain trekking carries real risks and that we must take precautions and look after one another.
Six of us began the descent at 8 a.m. The scenery was spectacular. Although we were following the same trail we had taken on the way up, everything looked different from the opposite direction, revealing fresh perspectives on the surrounding mountains and valleys. We stopped for a one-hour lunch break, which gave us a much-needed boost of energy before continuing.
Around 4:30 p.m., we finally arrived at Green View Lodge in Bamboo, where we would spend the night. After several days in the mountains, a hot shower—even for a small fee—felt like a welcome luxury.
Today’s trek covered approximately 9 miles (14.5 km), with a cumulative elevation loss of about 6,226 feet (1,898 meters). The long descent put considerable strain on our knees, making it another physically demanding day. Still, we were grateful to have made it safely down from Annapurna Base Camp, carrying unforgettable memories of the magnificent Himalayan sunrise with us.
