Today was the day we had all been looking forward to—finally reaching Annapurna Base Camp (ABC)!
We started trekking at 8:00 a.m. under sunny and chilly skies. The trail climbed gradually from Deurali (10,597 ft) to ABC (13,550 ft), taking us above the tree line. I lightened my backpack by leaving behind my sandals and power bank. Unlike previous days, there were no endless stone staircases, just a steady uphill climb.
We maintained a slow, comfortable pace as we gained altitude, stopping for lunch at Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC). As we climbed up, the clouds moved in and out.
Around 2:00 p.m., we finally reached the famous Annapurna Base Camp sign. Everyone was excited to take photos in front of it, celebrating our achievement after six days of trekking. Perhaps because we were mentally prepared for the challenge, today’s trek actually felt easier than yesterday’s. As we approached ABC, a couple of porters came down the trail to check on us and make sure we were doing well.
However, with cloudy skies obscuring the surrounding peaks and no snow on the ground, the scenery wasn’t quite as spectacular as we had imagined from the photos and videos we had seen online.
Throughout the trek, I often felt exhausted while hiking and wished for more frequent breaks. Yet once we reached our destination each day, I rarely felt particularly tired. I suppose I was physically exhausted but mentally energized by the excitement of the journey. In fact, I was usually the last person to go to bed.
Since it was too cold to spend much time outside, we gathered in the dining hall to keep warm. I noticed the porters playing cards and, after watching for a while, decided to join them. They taught me Kitti, a popular Nepalese card game in which each player receives nine cards and arranges them into three groups of three. The goal is to win two consecutive rounds. We had a wonderful time playing together, sharing plenty of laughter.
In the middle of a game, I suddenly spotted Fishtail Peak glowing golden in the evening sunlight through the window. I immediately stopped playing and rushed outside to take a photo. What an amazing sight!
Once again, we managed to get a private room, this time with four beds. The room was so small that there was barely any floor space left for our bags!
Every evening during the trek, our guide checked everyone’s blood oxygen saturation. Since we had reached the highest altitude of our journey, tonight was the final measurement. Our readings generally ranged from the high 80s to the high 90s throughout the trek. Our guide wasn’t overly concerned about occasional readings in the low 80s as long as there were no symptoms of altitude sickness.
Today was the only day of our trek when we had neither Wi-Fi nor cellular service. Every evening, we had made a point of sending a short message or a few photos to our family to let them know we were safe and sound in the mountains.
Today’s trek covered approximately 4.2 miles (6.8 km), with a cumulative elevation gain of about 3,800 feet (1,158 m). Despite the cloudy skies, reaching ABC after six challenging days, celebrating with our group, and enjoying a fun evening playing cards with the porters made it a memorable day.
