Trek Day 4 – Lower Sinuwa

October 11, 2026

After several days of rain, we were delighted to wake up to a forecast of clear skies. With the magnificent Fishtail Peak rising behind us, we did our morning stretches surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery. We hit the trail at 8:00 a.m.

The trail began with a series of descents and climbs before turning into a long, continuous ascent. Along the way, we passed a Buddhist stupa and admired lush valleys and terraced rice fields carved into steep hillsides, a testament to the hard work of local farmers.

We also saw damage from recent floods and landslides, including sections of trail and suspension bridges that had been relocated or rebuilt.

We stopped for lunch at Elysium Guest House and Restaurant. With the weather finally cooperating, we chose to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful mountain views while eating.

Around 4:00 p.m., we arrived at Hotel Chino in Lower Sinuwa, our destination for the night. From this point onward, all accommodations would have shared bathrooms. Fortunately, we still had a private room, hot shower and WiFi.

At the guesthouse, I asked the owner if there was a wood-burning stove where I could dry my wet clothes. He led me to a small shed perched on the edge of a steep slope, where a kettle was heating over a pit fire. He stretched an electrical wire across the shed for me to hang my clothes, then disappeared into a corner.

Curious, I went over to see what he was doing and discovered that he was caring for a newborn puppy. He even showed the little puppy to one of our friends, who loves dogs.

Unfortunately, the fire didn’t produce enough heat to dry my clothes. By the time I needed to retrieve them, it was already dark. I was uneasy about walking back to the shed near the steep drop in the darkness, so one of our porters kindly retrieved them for me.

It was another memorable experience along the trek, reminding me that the kindness of local people and unexpected encounters were just as much a part of the adventure as the hiking itself.

Today’s trek covered approximately 7 miles (11.3 km), with a cumulative elevation gain of 2,362 feet (720 m). The scenery was spectacular, but the steep climbs made it one of our most demanding days so far. We were relieved to finally reach Lower Sinuwa.
