After a warm breakfast, we set off again at 8:00 a.m. It had started raining, so we all put on our raincoats before hitting the trail. Leaving Ulleri behind, we continued our ascent through lush forests and countless stone steps. Along the way, we were rewarded with spectacular views of the deep gorge below.
Suddenly, a large herd of goats came rushing down the trail toward us—hundreds of them! We were all excited by the unexpected encounter and stopped to watch as they made their way past us.
Waterfalls seemed to be everywhere, cascading down the mountainsides after the heavy rains. We also saw evidence of recent flooding, including damaged sections of the trail where temporary bridges had been installed. In several places, we could still see scars left by earlier landslides. At one point, we had to make our way through a particularly muddy section (mud up to the ankles). Fortunately, our waterproof hiking boots kept our feet dry.
The combination of rain and perspiration eventually left my clothes completely soaked. Fortunately, the rain stopped after lunch. We continued our uphill trek and finally reached our destination, Ghorepani, around 2:00 p.m.
We stayed in Hotel Fishtail. We were assigned to a room with four beds and a private bathroom on the top floor.
Throughout the hike, we encountered hundreds, if not thousands, of goats making their way downhill. Our guides explained that the herds were being driven toward the towns and cities in preparation for Dashain, Nepal’s most important Hindu festival. During the festival, many families traditionally sacrifice goats or water buffalo as offerings to the goddess Durga. Seeing so many animals on the mountain trails gave us an unexpected glimpse into local traditions and the preparations for this major celebration.
Despite the rain, mud, and cold, it was another memorable day on the trail, filled with beautiful mountain scenery, rushing waterfalls, and the unforgettable sight of hundreds of goats descending the mountainside.
Today’s trek covered approximately 5.4 miles (8.7 km), with a cumulative elevation gain of about 2,870 feet (875 m). It was a longer and more demanding hike than yesterday’s. The combination of persistent rain, chilly temperatures, and wet clothing left me feeling cold and concerned about catching a cold. After arriving at the guesthouse, I spent some time sitting near the stove, trying to warm up.
