Trek Day 1 – Ulleri

October 8, 2026

Our Annapurna Base Camp trek officially began today. We woke up at 4:00 a.m. and gathered in the hotel lobby at 5:00 a.m. Once our yellow duffel bags were loaded into the van, we headed to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu International Airport for our 6:45 a.m. flight to Pokhara. Our guide Ram, took care of all the logistics, making everything easy for us. The domestic terminal was small and simple.

As we waited at the gate, we learned about “Nepali time” aka flights fly on their own time. We ended up taking off closer to 7:45am. We flew on a Buddha Air turboprop plane, and the flight took only about 25 minutes. The ride was smooth, and before we knew it, we had landed in Pokhara, Nepal’s second biggest city. After collecting our luggage, we met Gopi (the assistant guide) and our six porters outside the terminal and boarded a bus to begin the next leg of our journey.

Just 15–20 minutes into the drive, the bus stopped at a grocery store. Our guides and porters got off, and a few minutes later, they returned carrying several boxes of fresh fruit for the trek.

The first part of the drive was relatively smooth. Along the way, we stopped at Desi Tadka Multi Cuisine Restaurant & Bar for a short break. However, the second half of the journey was much bumpier as we made our way deeper into the mountains. After three and half hours on the road, we finally arrived at the starting point of our trek. Everyone was excited and eager to get moving.

Around 11:30 a.m., we began walking, and just five minutes later, we reached Mamta Guesthouse for lunch. We were free to order any food from the menu plus a coffee or tea; with the cost covered by our tour package. This was the first of many dal bhats and ginger honey lemon teas. We also noticed cannabis plants growing nearby, which was interesting since marijuana is illegal in Nepal.

After a leisurely lunch lasting about an hour and a half, we finally set off on our first real stretch of trekking. The trail climbed steadily uphill, with countless stone steps leading toward Ulleri. Before long, a light drizzle began to fall, adding a little extra challenge to the climb.

After about two hours of hiking, we arrived at our first overnight stop, Super View Point Guesthouse in Ulleri. The views from the guesthouse were spectacular, overlooking the surrounding green hills and valleys. Our room was a pleasant surprise—it was clean and comfortable, with two beds and a private bathroom, more than we had expected for a mountain guesthouse.

After settling in, we ordered dinner and drinks. I chose pizza, which unfortunately wasn’t particularly tasty. Soon after dinner, we retired to our room, ready for a good night’s sleep before the next day’s adventure.

Today’s trek covered approximately 1.7 miles (2.7 km), with an elevation gain of about 1,750 feet (533 m). Although it was a relatively short hike, the steep climb made it a memorable introduction to our Annapurna Base Camp adventure.
