Tallinn, Estonia

This morning, we walked to the ferry terminal, enjoying the quiet streets of Helsinki along the way. We boarded a Viking Line ferry bound for Tallinn. Interestingly, we had seen this very same ferry two days earlier, sailing through the narrow channel near the King’s Gate at Suomenlinna. The vessel was enormous—more like a mid-sized cruise ship than a typical ferry—and it was packed with passengers.
The sailing out of Helsinki was especially scenic. From the upper deck, we had panoramic views of the city and the surrounding islands as we made our way through the beautiful Helsinki archipelago.
After taking in the views, we went back inside but couldn’t find any available seats. Instead, we decided to have lunch at the buffet, which cost €33 per person. The food was decent, but more importantly, the restaurant gave us a quiet and comfortable place to sit and relax during the 2-hour-and-45-minute crossing.
As we approached Tallinn, we went back out onto the deck to enjoy our first views of the city. Seeing Tallinn come into view from the sea was an exciting introduction to Estonia and the beginning of our visit to another new country.
After arriving in Tallinn, we spent several hours exploring the beautifully preserved Old Town. We strolled leisurely along its narrow cobblestone streets, admired the colorful medieval buildings, and climbed one of the ancient gate towers for a panoramic view. The town was full of charm, and we thoroughly enjoyed wandering through its historic streets.
At 5:00 p.m., we boarded the 6 pm ferry back to Helsinki. Since both Estonia and Finland are members of the Schengen Area, traveling between the two countries was remarkably simple. There were no passport checks or border controls, making the journey feel much like domestic travel. We had dinner on board and returned to Helsinki after another pleasant crossing.
