Super Busy Day in Lofoten
July 11, 2026
We docked at Stokmarknes at 8:00 a.m. for a two-hour visit, giving us just enough time to explore the Hurtigruten Museum. Stokmarknes is the birthplace of Hurtigruten, and the museum's centerpiece is MS Finnmarken (1956), permanently preserved inside a striking glass building like a ship in a bottle. The museum also features a restored lounge from DS Finnmarken (1912), allowing visitors to compare two generations of Hurtigruten travel. Walking through the historic ship gave us a real appreciation for how ship design, passenger comfort, and onboard standards have evolved over the decades.
After leaving Stokmarknes, we sailed through some of northern Norway's most spectacular scenery, including the famous Trollfjord. Although the fjord is only about 2 kilometers long, its entrance is just 100 meters wide. Our ship made a special detour into the fjord before performing a graceful turnaround. At times, we passed so close to the towering cliffs that it felt as though we could reach out and touch the rock. Cruising through Trollfjord was truly one of the highlights of the voyage. The delicious fish soup was served on the deck.
Our second stop was Svolvær, the largest town in the Lofoten Islands. I joined a RIB sea eagle safari. Riding in the front of the high-speed RIB was exhilarating—and quite bumpy at times. The boat stopped among several small islands, where we watched majestic white-tailed sea eagles soaring overhead before swooping down to snatch fish that our guide tossed into the water, while countless seagulls competed for the same meal. The combination of dramatic scenery, high-speed boating, and close encounters with wildlife made for a fantastic excursion.
That evening, the ship hosted a watch party for the Norway–England football match. I stayed until the final whistle at 1:30 a.m. the next day. Although I was disappointed to see Norway lose, it was still a fun evening. Watching the match with fellow passengers made for a lively and memorable end to an action-packed day.
