July 13, 2026

This was our final day on Hurtigruten's 14-day Svalbard Line, and we visited two memorable ports.

Our first stop was Ålesund, a beautiful medium-sized city. After the devastating fire of 1904, the city was rebuilt in the distinctive Art Nouveau style for which it is now famous. As soon as we disembarked, we headed straight for the 418 steps leading up to the Aksla Viewpoint. Although the staircase was steep, it was a relatively short climb. From the top, we were rewarded with the classic postcard view of the harbor, surrounding islands, and dramatic mountains.

After descending, we strolled along the waterfront, admiring the colorful buildings lining the harbor. Of all the cities we visited in Norway, Ålesund was certainly one of the most beautiful.

The ship then sailed into the magnificent Hjørundfjord, passing small villages nestled along the shoreline. The scenery was breathtaking.

After an early lunch, the ship anchored at Sæbø, the principal village in the fjord and a popular starting point for walks and hikes.

The village welcomed us with a concert in its church, which we attended. A violinist, accompanied by a pianist, performed a delightful program, and the pianist also played the church's pipe organ. The music was beautiful and moving, although the concert lasted a little longer than I had expected.

After the concert, I took a short hike to a mountainside hytta, where I enjoyed a wonderful panoramic view of the village and our ship anchored in the bay.

Before returning to the ship, I treated myself to a cinnamon roll and a cup of coffee while sitting by the waterfront, watching people stroll past. It was a peaceful and fitting way to bring this unforgettable journey along Norway's spectacular coastline to a close.

For dinner we continued to indulge in Norwegian cuisine at the Flora restaurant. Before retiring for the night, we were treated to one of the most spectacular sunsets we had seen on the entire trip.
