Jyväskylä, Finland

Yesterday, we stayed at our cottage while our friends drove to Turku for sightseeing. We did almost nothing—simply continued to enjoy Finland’s sauna culture, rowed our little boat around the peaceful bay, and soaked in the tranquil surroundings. For lunch, we baked a Norwegian frozen pizza, and to our surprise, it was fantastic—one of the best pizzas we had ever tasted. Considering Norway is often said to have one of the highest rates of pizza consumption per capita in the world, perhaps we shouldn’t have been so surprised! It was a wonderfully relaxing day, filled with simple pleasures and the peaceful rhythm of Finnish cottage life.

Our friends prepared a delicious, comforting home-style dinner. After dinner, the two of us guys headed out in a small boat, paddling from the quiet waters into a much larger stretch of open water. We had a wonderful time out on the sea.

Today, we left the Turku Archipelago and began our drive toward Koli National Park, stopping overnight in Jyväskylä to keep our daily driving time to less than five hours. The journey took us through endless forests, past countless lakes, and over bridges connecting Finland's beautiful lake country. It was easy to understand why Finland is known as the "Land of a Thousand Lakes"—in reality, it has nearly 188,000 of them.

Jyväskylä is located in the heart of Finland's Lakeland region. We stopped in Tampere for lunch and found a Chinese restaurant called Shanghai Restaurant. After several days of mostly Finnish food, it was nice to enjoy familiar flavors again, and the meal exceeded our expectations. Afterwards, we wandered through the nearby market before continuing our drive to Hotel Verso in Jyväskylä.

Hotel Verso is located right in the middle of the city's pedestrian district. Since cars are not allowed on the streets above, we drove through an underground parking garage and parked directly beneath the hotel.

After settling in, we headed out to explore the city. We walked up Harju Hill, hoping to enjoy the panoramic view from the observation tower, only to discover that it had already closed for the day. Instead, we made our way down to the lakeside promenade and harbor, where the atmosphere was lively yet unhurried.

We found a restaurant aboard a boat and ordered a local beer, fish and chips, and a few appetizers while enjoying the beautiful lake view. As we relaxed, several sauna boats drifted slowly across the water, reminding us once again how deeply sauna is woven into Finnish life.

It felt like the Finnish way to travel—to slow down, relax, and savor the experience rather than rushing from one attraction to the next.

Hotel Verso
