Bergen
June 29, 2026
This morning, we woke up early and walked to Nordnes Park. The area was peaceful and beautiful in the soft morning light. Afterwards, we enjoyed a simple breakfast of chocolate croissants and lattes.
After a short break, we visited Bryggen, the UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its colorful wooden buildings lining the old harbor. We wandered through its narrow alleys, browsed a few shops。
We then headed to the Music Pavilion to join a “free” walking tour. Our guide was entertaining and chose to focus less on historical events and more on everyday life in Norway, which made the tour especially relatable. One fascinating feature he highlighted was Bergen’s modern waste management system. Many of the street trash bins are connected to an underground vacuum waste collection network, allowing garbage to be transported beneath the city rather than collected by traditional garbage trucks. The tour was both enjoyable and informative, leaving us with a deeper appreciation of Bergen—not only as the gateway to Norway’s magnificent fjords, but also as a city that embraces innovative and sustainable urban living.
After the walking tour, we headed to a fish soup restaurant recommended by our guide and tried the local specialty. It was indeed delicious. Then, we took the funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen, one of Bergen’s seven mountains, where we were rewarded with panoramic views of the city, the harbor, and the surrounding mountains. After a relaxing coffee break, we walked back down to the city through the forest. Along the way, we found a shop selling brown cheese ice cream. It sounded unusual, but it was surprisingly delicious, with a rich, caramel-like flavor.
To end the day, we treated ourselves to an unforgettable seafood feast featuring live king crab, whale carpaccio, and razor clams—all of which we were tasting for the very first time. Every dish was incredibly fresh and delicious, making it a memorable culinary experience. It did, however, cost a small fortune, with the live king crab alone priced at 3,500 NOK per kilogram. Fortunately for us, our friend generously picked up the tab, making this extravagant seafood feast even more memorable!
