October 16–17, 2026
After eight challenging days of trekking to Annapurna Base Camp, we welcomed a change of pace. Since our trek ended a day early, we had an extra day to explore Pokhara. On October 16, we hired a van and driver for sightseeing, while the following day’s tour was included in our trekking package.
Day 1 – Pumdikot Shiva Statue and World Peace Pagoda
We began at the impressive Pumdikot Shiva Statue, perched on a hill overlooking Pokhara Valley. The enormous statue and sweeping views of the city and surrounding mountains made it a memorable stop.
We then visited the World Peace Pagoda, a gleaming white Buddhist stupa overlooking Phewa Lake. Its peaceful setting and panoramic views provided a welcome contrast to the demanding mountain trails.
Day 2 – Exploring Pokhara’s Highlights
We started at Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, a sacred limestone cave near Devi’s Fall. The section overlooking the waterfall had been closed due to recent flooding but reopened that very day. We were fortunate to be among the first visitors to see it again.
Next, we visited a Tibetan refugee settlement and carpet workshop, where we admired beautifully handwoven rugs. Several members of our group purchased rugs as souvenirs. At the Seti River Gorge, we looked down into the deep, narrow channel carved by the rushing river.
We continued to Bindabasini Temple, which was bustling with worshippers during Dashain, one of Nepal’s most important Hindu festivals. We then explored Old Pokhara Bazar, with its historic buildings, narrow streets, and small shops, before visiting a traditional weaving factory.
In the afternoon, we enjoyed a relaxing boat ride on Phewa Lake. After days of climbing endless stone staircases, it felt wonderful to simply sit back and enjoy the scenery.
The food was another highlight! After eight days of limited menus at mountain guesthouses, we thoroughly enjoyed Chinese food at every meal. Pokhara had some of the best Chinese food we had tasted, making every meal a treat. Hot showers, comfortable beds, and a freshly brewed cup of coffee at Himalayan Java were equally welcome luxuries after our days on the trail.
Our two days in Pokhara were the perfect ending to our Annapurna Base Camp adventure—a chance to relax, recover, and appreciate the simple comforts of city life.
